Ethnobotany of Food Plants (quelites) Sold in Two Traditional Markets of Oaxaca, Mexico

•Taxonomic identity, management and agro-habitat of twenty-two traditional edible plants of Oaxaca, Mexico are presented.•These plants, recognized as quelites by the local people, receive 32 common names, 6 parts used and 11 mode of consumption.•Wild, non-cultivated and cultivated food plants have high nutritional or nutraceutical value.•The annual availability and provenance of food plants sold differ markedly between markets.•Local food system ensures nutritional and health needs and promote cultural identity.
