•Shape-stabilized PEG composites were prepared by sol–gel process.•The increased energy storage ability of composite was from cocrystallization effect.•Diammonium phosphate improved flame retardancy properties of PEG composite.•PEG composites had potential to be used as thermal energy storage materials.
