Challenging the Traditional: Professional Knowledge, Professional Research and the RAE

The author argues the need for more research into professional traditions, with a view to gain not just knowledge, but also new understanding. The audience is wider than that of the traditional academic area and the comparison of the number of units of submissions to the Research assessment exercice (RAE) from the two sectors : Academic and professional displays the neglect of dual discourse - ie, a concentration on writing for a small academic audience at the expense of the wider profession.
