A detailed investigation of the mass spectral fragmentation patterns of triterpenes of the serratenediol family has been carried out This study reveals that the application of mass spectrometry to the structural elucidation of these compounds can be invaluable. Characteristic fragmentations, particularly in the 7-membered C ring, allow definite allocations to structure and functionality in this series.
