In recent years orthopaedic and trauma surgery has been enriched by new technologies, tools and materials that enable to deal safely with once untreatable pathologies. These include degenerative and traumatic pathologies of the hip and knee, benign osteo-articular neoplasms and traumatic, degenerative or neoplastic spine pathologies. The advanced age of patients no longer represents a limitation of surgical indication thanks to coordinated intervention of cardiology and anaesthesiology specialists; and yet unresolved problems remain, particularly with regard to complications of vascular nature, related with the traumatic pathology and with the surgical act.
