Abstract
A general route for the synthesis of highly substituted benzenoids ( 2 ) has been developed. Unsaturated lactones 7 are converted to the corresponding carboxy cyclohexenones 8 . Subsequent aromatization gives phenols 9 . The phenolic functionality provides a handle for further modification, providing benzenoids of type 2 .
