Caffeoyl Conjugates From Echinacea Species - Structures And Biological-Activity

Twelve caffeoyl conjugates were isolated from Echinacea pallida and their structures elucidated by NMR and mass spectrometry. The compounds are either caffeic glycosides or caffeic esters of quinic or tartaric acid. Three were previously unknown and five were isolated from this plant for the first time. The distribution of these compounds in the different organs of the plant is discussed. The antiviral and cell growth inhibitory effects of the major products are briefly reported.
