LLETZ — diathermy loop excision

Cervical intra-epithelial neolplasia (CIN) remains a significant problem with regard to diagnosis and treatment. The development of the technique of large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) by Prendiville et al 3 as an outpatient excisional treatment has revolutionised the management of CIN. This technique, which is easily learnt and appropriate for any outpatient setting, is quick, safe and readily accepted by patients. It is associated with few immediate complications and minimal long term morbidity. This review describes the development of diathermy loop excision and outlines the technique. It discusses the morbidity associated with the procedure and details the benefits of diathermy loop excision when compared to other local treatment methods employed in the management of CIN.
