Responses Regulations And Adaptations Of Animals Following Changes In Temperature And Salinity . Experiments With Zoothamniumhiketes(Ciliata Peritricha)

Upon sudden changes in external salinity the ciliate protozoonZoothamnium hiketesPrecht temporarily changes its cell volume. Resistance to very low and high salinities depends on the previous salinity history. The time course of changes in resistance to external salinity is described. “Aftereffects” in the sense of temperature hardening were not observed. Considering these findings, responses, regulations and adaptations (acclimatizations) of animals exposed to changes in temperature and salinity are discussed in general.
