Younès Messaddeq received the Ph.D. degree in solid state chemistry from the University of Rennes, France, in 1990. In 1994, he joined the Institute of Chemistry as a Professor, and most of his research was focused on the development of advanced glass-based materials, the production of specialty optical fibers, and the preparation of nanostructured materials. In 2010, he joined the Physics Department, Laval University, QC, Canada, as a Full Professor and earned the prestigious Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Enabling Photonic Innovations, which provided U.S. 28M in research funds. In 2013, he was appointed as the Director of the Joint International Research Unit UNESP, Laval University, for five years. He is currently leading research activities on glass and optical fibers at the Centre for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL). He has published more than 500 papers in refereed journals and holds 20 patents. He is a member of several committees (Editorial Board— JNCS and JNOPG, a member of the NSF/International Materials Institute for New Functionality in Glass, ISNOG, and ICG). He has received several distinctions and awards, including the Specialty Optical Fibers Award for telecommunication, the STA Fellowship on optical fibers from the Japanese Minister of Science and Technology, the Heraeus Dental Award on dental composites, the Ruy Ferreira Santo Award, and 1A classification from the Minister of Science and Technology (CNPq, Brazil).
