April 1978 to April 1980, scientific assistant at the Pathological Institute of the University Clinic Westend of the Freie Universität Berlin (head: Prof. Dr. S. Blühmcke). In 1980, three months of scientific training at the Pathological Institute of the Cantonal Hospital of Basel (head: Prof. Dr. H. U. Zollinger). From May 1980 to May 1985, scientific assistant at the Department of Internal Medicine, Medical Clinic and Policlinic specialized in nephrology (head: Prof. Dr. A. Distler). During that time ‘rotation assistant’ in the fields of gastro¬enterology (head: Prof. E. O. Riecken), cardiology/pulmonology and intensive care (head: Prof. Dr. R. Schröder), endocrinology (head: Prof. Dr. W. Oelkers), haematology (head: Prof. Dr. H. Brücher) and Medical Policlinic.
In February 1985, certified as a specialist in internal medicine. In November 1987, certified for the subspecialty of nephrology.
Since July 1985 member of the Department of Internal Medicine III – main emphasis on renal disease and hypertention – at the Humboldt-Hospital in Berlin-Reinickendorf (head: Prof. Dr. M. Molzahn). From 1986 to 1995, nephrology consultant at the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the German Heart Center, Berlin (head: Prof. Dr. R. Hetzer).
In April 1987, appointment as senior physician, since September 1992 permanent deputy of the head of the Department of Nephrology/ Hypertension. Senior consultant in nephrology for all medical departments of the Humboldt Hospital Berlin-Reinickendorf. In July 1990, confirment of the ‘Venia legendi’ (postdoctoral university lecturing qualification) and lecturing authorization for the subject of internal medicine and appointment as assistant professor at the Freie Universität Berlin.
Since March 1998 head of the department of internal medicine III (Nephrology / Hypertension) at the Humboldt-Hospital, Berlin-Reinickendorf.
December 2000 appointed professor of internal medicine at the Free University of Berlin.
June 2012 Medical Director of the nation-wide acting Education and Training Center of the Kuratorium für Dialyse und Nierentransplantation (Curatorium for dialysis and kidney transplantation, non-profit, Frankfurt/Neu-Isenburg) covering more than 220 local dialysis facilities.
November 2012 additional certification as specialist in Geriatric Medicine. January 2013 head of the Department of Internal Medicine – Geriatrics at the Vivantes Humbolt Klinikum. Retirement from hospital positions at November 2014.
2014 Multi-stakeholder project and consultant in the assisted home peritoneal dialysis network with PMC (Pflege Managed Care, Berlin).
2017 Cooperative clinical research with Institute of Laboratory Medicine Berlin (together with Prof. B. Hocher et al.) on obesity in obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery (Berlin Bariatric Cohort Study - BBC).
June 2017 Appointment of Visiting Professor at Jinan University Guangzhou, China.
March 2022 Visiting Scientist Department of Nephrology and Medical Intensive Care, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany
March 2023 cooperation with Hebrew University Jerusalem, Israel, on food hording in Holocoaust survivors and people experienced traumatic events (with Dr. Shelly Rachmann)
For more than 35 years practical experience in the field of internal medicine with the main emphasis on renal disease and hypertension, including all procedures of renal replacement therapy (renal transplantation, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis). Intensive cooperation with the areas of internal and operative intensive care, gastroenterology, including interven-tional procedures, oncology and haematology and interventional angiology. Committee member of the board of rehabilitation, transition, and geriatric nephrology of the German Society of Nephrology.
Scientific focuses: Clinic and epidemiology of drug-induced renal diseases, occupational exposure risks for renal cell and urothelium carcinomas, diabetic nephropathy, cardiovascular complications of endstage renal disease, prophylaxis in renal replacement therapy, advances in peritoneal dialysis treatment, rehabilitation of patients suffering from chronic renal disease, geriatric nephrology.
Co-founder of the Gesellschaft zur Rehabililtation chronisch Nierenkranker Berlin e. V. (Society for the Rehabilitation of patients suffering from chronic renal disease) (1986) as well as of the Society of Nephrology of Berlin-Brandenburg. (1990). Member of the German Society of Nephrology, the German Association of Clinical Nephrology, the Committee for Dialysis and Renal Transplantation, the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis, the European Dialysis and Transplant Association and Member of the American Society of Nephrology. Member of the steering comitee of the QiN poject (Qualität in der Nephrologie. Chairing: KFH-Neu Isenburg, Prof. Baldamus / Cologne, Prof. Lauterbach / Cologne).
