I am a Marine Biologist interested in the biology, ecology and evolution of a highly threatened vertebrate group, the Cartilaginous fishes (sharks, rays and chimaeras). I have dedicated most of my research work in uncovering the patterns and possible drivers of population structure in widespread and highly mobile shark taxa and have also focused on clarifying the species diversity and evolutionary histories of several shark genera with problematic taxonomy. I have done so by using (neutral) molecular genetic markers and tools. More recently, I have become particularly interested in Chondrichthyan immunogenetics as adaptive immunity genes can serve as alternative (non-neutral) markers to study the population structure of my target taxa. Most of my research work has focused on commercially exploited shark species aiming at directly contributing to the delineation of adequate management and conservation plans. In addition to this, I am currently applying eDNA metabarcoding to the monitoring and assessment of elasmobranch diversity in different parts of the eastern Atlantic aiming at informing conservationists and managers.
