Research Impact
Cell identity depends on a precise spatiotemporal control of gene expression. Transcription is a highly regulated process with different levels of regulation (genetic and epigenetic), together known as a ‘regulome’. Understanding the effects on the regulome of a) inappropriate transcription factor expression; b) genetic variations on coding and non-coding (regulatory) sequences; and c) chromosomal rearrangements, is fundamental to defining the cause of many diseases (malignant and non-malignant). The potential value of epigenetic therapeutic intervention is increasing recognised as epigenetic modifiers (HDACi, de-methylating agents, Epigenetic readers and writers drugs) are already showing promising results, particularly in cancer.
