I earned my Ph.D. in genetics from OHSU in Portland, Oregon, searching for the gene for Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome. In 1998, I became a research scientist working on the human genome project at RIKEN Genomic Sci. Ctr. in Yokohama, Japan. A few years later I became a team leader in bioinformatics, where I continued to work on the human genome, the chimpanzee genome, and more recently on metagenomics as related to human health and the environment.
