T.R. Leyshon Griffiths

I qualified from St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School in London in 1989. After early posts at Cambridge (Downing College), London and Norwich, I obtained a research MD in Newcastle and won the national Patey Prize from the Surgical Research Society for my work on 'Role of P53 in Bladder Cancer'. I completed Urological surgical training in Newcastle and in 2002 I was appointed to my current post as Consultant Urological Surgeon in Leicester. In 2020, I became East Midlands Cancer Alliance Urology Expert Cancer Advisory Group (ECAG) Lead. I have been Principal Investigator for a number of NIHR-funded bladder cancer clinical trials including BOXIT, HYMN and CALIBER. I was on the Trial Management Group for HYMN and CALIBER. I am an expert reviewer for NIHR HTA and have contributed to NICE assessments. I was a former Trustee and then Secretary of the national 'Action on Bladder Cancer' charity between January 2010 and September 2014. I have a special clinical interest in hyperthermic intravesical chemotherapy (HIVEC) for BCG-unresponsive, high risk, non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. I also have a research interest in patient safety - 'Developing Healthcare Team Observations for Patient Safety' (HTOPS). At Leicester Medical School, I have a teaching-focused post where I am Associate Professor, Head of Year 4, Professionalism Support Unit Lead, Academic Champion for Undergraduate Medical Education and BAUS Medical School Lead (Leicester).
