Bio
Steve Graham is Professor of International Child Health with University of Melbourne. He joined the Centre for International Child Health in the Department of Paediatrics in 2008.
He is a paediatrician with clinical and research experience in resource-limited settings in the African and Asia-Pacific regions. Prior to the current appointment in Melbourne, Steve worked in Malawi, with the College of Medicine from 1995 until 2007, and was Deputy Director of the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme from 2001 until 2007. Research activities have included studies of pneumonia, HIV, invasive bacterial disease especially non-typhoidal Salmonellae, tuberculosis and neonatal sepsis. The main focus of his current research is the epidemiology, prevention and management of tuberculosis, including multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, in children and adolescents. Steve has been the recipient of multiple research grants, and he has authored or co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications. Steve is particularly interested in working with disease control programmes in improving guidelines for evidence-based practice and in improving implementation of such guidelines. He is particularly recognised for his global leadership to increase attention to tuberculosis in children and has worked with numerous National TB Programmes in Africa and Asia-Pacific. He is lead author of WHO's Guidance for management of TB in children. Steve was a founding member and was Chair (2011-7) of the WHO and Stop TB Partnership's Child and Adolescent TB Working Group, and member of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on TB for WHO. He was awarded the Karel Styblo Public Health Prize for services to child TB in 2015. Steve also works part-time for the Burnet Institute as Senior Principal Research Fellow on TB and is child TB and lung health consultant for IUATLD (The Union) providing technical assistance, expertise and support in operational research in many countries.
