Paulo Freire's Life and Work
Paulo Freire was born in 1921 in Recife, Brazil, to a middle-class family. He experienced poverty and hunger during the Great Depression, which affected his education and health. He studied law and philosophy at the University of Recife, but his passion was for teaching and learning. He began his career as a secondary school teacher and later became a professor of history and philosophy of education at the same university.
In 1947, Freire started working with adult illiterates in the rural areas of northeastern Brazil, where he developed his innovative method of literacy education. He based his method on the principles of dialogue, respect, and problem-solving, rather than on memorization and repetition. He also linked literacy to social and political awareness, or conscientization, which aimed to empower the learners to challenge the oppressive structures and practices in their society.
Freire's work gained national and international recognition, and he was appointed as the director of the National Literacy Program by the Brazilian government in 1963. However, his work was interrupted by the military coup of 1964, which accused him of being a subversive and a communist. Freire was arrested and exiled for 16 years.
