Jackson Shaun P

Executive summary Shaun Jackson is a clinician-scientist who has been an NHMRC Research Fellow for the last 20 years (currently an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow). He established an independent research laboratory at Monash University in 1998. In 2004, he co-founded the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases (ACBD) at the Alfred Hospital. In 2010, he was awarded an NHMRC Australia Fellowship (which is the most prestigious fellowship in Australia awarded to the top 40 medical researchers in the country). Shaun also holds an adjunct Professorial appointment at The Scripps Research Institute, California, USA (2010-current). In 2013, he was appointed the Inaugural Director of Cardiovascular Research, the Heart Research Institute (HRI) & Charles Perkins Centre (CPC), The University of Sydney. Research Translation & Commercialisation Co-founded the biotechnology company, Kinacia Pty. Ltd., which commercialised discoveries from his laboratory’s basic research program. His laboratory made the seminal discovery that PI 3-kinase p110 was essential for arterial thrombus formation (Jackson et al., Nat. Med. 11:507, 2005), representing a potentially important new target for antithrombotic therapies (Jones D. Nat. Rev. Drug. Dis. 4:457, 2005). He and his colleagues raised $15m in venture capital funds and developed two new classes of PI 3-kinase inhibitors. Research Leadership Co-founder of the ACBD and principal investigator on the consortium that secured $8 million from the Victorian State Government for the creation of purpose built ACBD laboratories at the Alfred Hospital. As Research Director (ACBD) during the period 2004-2012, he facilitated expansion of research, clinical and education components of the Centre to >120 basic scientific personnel with an annual operating budget of ~$10 million p.a. Over the last 5 years (2013-2017) he has held 9x NHMRC Project Grants (8 as CIA), 1x NHMRC Development Grant, 1x ARC LIEF (CIA). Several senior members of my research group have been awarded fellowships (ARC Future, NHMRC CJ Martin, NHF CDA), and numerous NHMRC/NHF & ARC Grants.
