Roberto Angelini is a Lecturer at Swansea University Medical School, Institute of Life Science, since June 2020. As a lipid biologist, he routinely employs mass spectrometry to carry out lipidomics studies as applied to biomedical research. He acquired most of his knowledge and technical skills at the Angela Corcelli’ s lab (University of Bari, Italy) where he carried out his master’s degree and PhD dissertation research. At the Corcelli lab, he was trained on deciphering the lipid composition of biological membranes of archaeal, bacterial and eukaryotic cells, exposed to different environmental modifications including osmotic stress, oxygen availability, and exposure to pharmacologically active compounds. As part of these studies, he developed a direct MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry method for lipid analysis in native biological samples (i.e. skipping the lipid extraction procedure) and applied the direct coupling of TLC and MALDI-TOF-MS to the study of archaeal lipids. During his PhD studies he spent almost one year in the Schiller-Fuchs’ s lab (University of Leipzig, Germany) where he employed MALDI-TOF-MS lipidomics for the study of blood serum lipid biomarkers of inflammation. Also, at Angela Corcelli’ s lab, he spent almost two years of postdoctoral research studies focusing on the mitochondrial lipid cardiolipin in Barth Syndrome (BS). He developed a method for MALDI-TOF-MS analysis of cardiolipin for BS testing in native isolated leukocytes that allows the diagnosis in a fast and inexpensive way. Later, with the aim of increasing his knowledge and technical skills, he joined the Kagan team, at Pittsburgh University where he focused on the identification of oxidized lipids by HPLC-MS/MS. Finally, he sharpened his LC-MS analytical skills in the Piomelli lab at University of California, Irvine, where, for a short period, he set up protocols for endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids analysis. He came back to Europe thanks to a successful MSCA-COFUND application, a three-year postdoctoral Individual Fellowship. He thus worked in the Griffiths-Wang laboratory at Swansea University where he developed a MALDI-TOF-MS application to image sterol lipids in brain as applied to neurological diseases. At Swansea University he has the privilege of delivering modules on membrane biology, lipidomics and neural lipids.
As a long-term career goal, Roberto is aiming to establish himself as an academic scientist in the field of neurolipidomics. He is currently funded by the Royal Society and by the Academy of Medical Sciences to work on the role of plasmalogen lipids in synapse function.
He strongly believes research and teaching are equally important: unveiling the multifaceted roles of lipids in health and disease will require an interdisciplinary approach that new generations will need to be trained for. Lipids are characterized by an extensive structural diversity that mirrors the diversity of their biological functions. Elucidating the key roles of lipids in cellular processes is the next frontier in biology research. To this end, biochemists, cell biologists, physicists and information technologists will have to work together. Roberto’s goal is to provide a relevant contribution in this direction.
