Richard Crout

Richard J. Crout received B.S., M.S., and D.M.D. degrees in Biology, Pharmacology, and Dental Medicine, respectively, from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation, he completed an Oral Surgery Internship followed by becoming the Assistant Director of the program and a Clinical Instructor in Pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine from 1974–1980. During this time he also received an NIH fellowship resulting in a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and a Certificate in Periodontics. His research involved the evaluation of long chain alcohols as antibiotics. Following graduation in 1980, he accepted a joint position as Associate Professor in Periodontics at the School of Dentistry and Adjunct Associate Professor in Pharmacology at the School of Medicine, both at West Virginia University. Research interests include evaluations of local anesthetics, narcotic analgesics, immunmodulators, oral health disparities, and ultrasonic diagnostics in dentistry. Dr. Crout is currently Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Periodontics in the School of Dentistry and Professor of Biochemistry in the School of Medicine at West Virginia University. Dr. Crout holds three patents, has over 150 abstracts and archival manuscripts, and has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally.
