Richard Charles Alexander Pitwon

Dr Richard Pitwon is a director, scientist, engineer and consultant with more than 22 years transformational expertise in optical and photonic system interconnect, integration and architectures for hyperscale data centre, HPC, 5G and IoT data-communications applications with extensive experience in managing international, multi-million-dollar collaborative research and development programmes. In 2018 he founded Resolute Photonics Ltd, which provides design and consultancy services on optical, photonic and quantum interconnect for data centres, 6G and IoT. Richard holds 54 patents in diverse fields including optical and photonic interconnect technologies, photonic integrated circuits, optical transceivers, electro-optic circuit boards, glass and polymer waveguides, optical assembly, board and chip-level optical connectors, system enclosure cooling management and hyperscale data centre and High Performance Computer photonic architectures. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications including 5 international standards and given over 90 public talks. He is the current chair of the IEC international standards subcommittee on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components (IEC SC86B) and principal UK standards expert (BSI) for optical interconnect, optical circuit boards, photonic integrated circuits and electronic assembly. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the IET (FIET), Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP), Senior Member of the IEEE (SIEEE) and Senior Member of SPIE. He is also the chair of IEEE UK and Ireland Photonics chapter and the founder and chair of the IEEE UK and Ireland Quantum Group. He is also a key contributor to UK and EU government strategy on optical, photonic and quantum technologies through his membership of the Photonics 21 Board of Stakeholders, UK Photonics Leadership Group and other organisations. He is a full member of iNEMI and current chair of the Technology Integration Group on optical projects.
