Bio
Redox biology is a broad and multidisciplinary area of science that encompasses physiologic, pathophysiologic and therapeutic arenas. Also referred to by the terms ‘oxidative stress’ or ‘free radical biology’, perturbations in redox homeostasis has been implicated in all major diseases, in multiple cell and organ systems and across prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. Moreover, redox biology is at the interface of how the environment and lifestyle choices affect health and disease. With this broad background, our laboratories goal is to understand the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying perturbations in redox signaling to development of inflammatory disease, and then using these insights to develop and test therapeutics. We employ an interdisciplinary approach encompassing test-tube biochemistry, cell and animal models of disease, therapeutics and translational / clinical studies. Specific and recent areas of focus include i) Determine mechanisms of lung injury in response to Sepsis and inhaled toxicants, ii) Understanding mechanisms by which red blood cells hemolyse in critically ill patients and, in turn, how this may contribute to cardiopulmonary injury in Sepsis, trauma and Cystic Fibrosis. iii) Determine how endothelial N-glycans control chronic inflammation associated with atherosclerosis and diseases that increase risk for CVD (e.g. Diabetes). iv) Assess how the oral microbiome may affect oral, pulmonary and systemic nitric oxide bioavailability to modulate cardiopulmonary disease (e.g. bronchopulmonary dysplasia).
