Saurabh Rathore

Dr. Saurabh Rathore joined as an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in August 2023. Saurabh Rathore completed his Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Aeronautical Society of India (2013), Master of Technology in Earth System Science from IIT Kharagpur (2015), and PhD from the University of Tasmania, Australia (2021). After the completion of his Ph.D., Saurabh joined LOCEAN, Sorbonne University, Paris (2021-2022), and then he moved to the University of New South Wales, Australia (2022-2023) for his postdoctoral research. Saurabh has research work experience from various research organizations and technical institutes that include the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) USA, the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) Australia, Sorbonne University (LOCEAN) France, CCRC University of New South Wales, Australia, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology-Pune (IITM), and Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP). Saurabh's Ph.D. was on Investigating the hemispheric asymmetry in global ocean warming and the links between sea surface salinity and Australian precipitation. One of his works was in the top 5% of abstracts selected for the media and public highlights at EGU-2019, Vienna where they showed that sea surface salinity can be used as a skillful predictor for Australian rainfall. Saurabh is passionate about understanding the ocean in changing climate and how these changes in the ocean shape the global and regional climate. Over the past decade, Saurabh's research interest is mainly focused on the global oceans but has a particular focus on the Southern Ocean with detection and attribution studies, ocean warming and sea level rise, ocean circulation, watermass changes, marine heatwaves, compound extreme events, mesoscale eddies, global and regional hydrological cycle, ocean and climate modelling, and machine learning.
