Career Trajectory
Bio
Robert O. Knuteson received the Ph.D. degree from the Physics Department, University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW-Madison), Madison, WI, USA, in 1987. His dissertation was in the area of theoretical high-energy physics.
He accepted a position at the UW-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center in September 1987 working with Prof. William L. Smith, Dr. Henry Revercomb, and Dr. Paul Menzel in the area of high spectral resolution remote sensing in the infrared. He has been intimately involved in several instrument projects, including the high-altitude aircraft instrument High-resolution Interferometer Sounder (HIS) and the ground-based Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI). His areas of expertise are in instrument calibration, satellite product validation, and land surface remote sensing. He is actively involved with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Atmospheric IR Sounder (AIRS), Metop IR Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), and Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) science team activities. He is actively involved in grants from the Department of Energy, NASA, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
