Philip is a clinical scientist with 35 years' specialist interest in amyloidosis and related diseases. He founded the NHS National Amyloidosis Centre in 1999, was joint head of the NAC and UCL Centre for Amyloidosis until he stepped down in 2019. He developed his interest in amyloidosis as an MRC Clinical Training Fellow in the late 1980s and has been supported since by The Wellcome Trust and subsequently the joint award of an MRC Programme Grant with Prof Sir Mark Pepys. His clinical and genetic work in autoinflammatory disorders led to characterisation of the cryopyrin associated autoinflammatory periodic syndrome (CAPS) and the pivotal role of IL-1 in its pathogenesis and its remarkable response to IL-1 blockade, leading to widespread highly effective treatment of many autoinflammatory disease through IL-1 blockade with anakinra or canakinumab. He has had a longstanding interest in imaging having developed SAP scintigraphy for diagnosis and monitoring of amyloidosis and validated repurposed bone scintigraphy for identification of cardiac amyloidosis. He created the world’s first cardiac MRI centre specialising in amyloidosis at NAC in 2015, and had lately been focussed on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis. His team have created new experimental models of amyloid, including the first transgenic model of human cardiac ATTR amyloid. He has had a long interest in the potential for antibody therapy as a strategy to eliminate established amyloid deposits.
