Peter J. Turchi (Life Fellow, IEEE) received the B.S.E., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in aerospace and mechanical sciences from Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA, in 1967, 1969, and 1970, respectively.
From 1970 to 1972, he was an officer with the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM, USA, where he initiated programs on soft X-ray generation by multimegampere-driven plasma implosions and explosively-driven magnetic flux compression generators. From 1976 to 1980, he was Chief of the Plasma Technology Branch, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC, USA. In 1981, he became the Director of the Washington Research Laboratory, R&D Associates Inc., Alexandria, VA, USA, where he led projects on high energy-density pulsed power for nuclear weapons simulation, space propulsion, and missile defense. In 1989, he was appointed as a Professor of aerospace engineering with The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA, where he taught and conducted research on advanced space propulsion. In 1999, he joined the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM, USA, where he led the development of pulsed power and liner implosion experiments. In 2002, he returned to the Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, NM, USA, as the Senior Executive/Scientist for high-power microwaves and pulsed power. In 2005, he resumed and extended his activities at Los Alamos, retiring in 2011. From 2015 to 2017, he was a Senior Scientist with NumerEx, LLC, Corrales, NM, USA, and also the Principal Investigator for its ARPA-E project in low-cost controlled fusion. He is currently a Vice President for Technology with Compact Fusion Systems Inc., Santa Fe, NM, USA.
Dr. Turchi received the IEEE Erwin Marx Award for pulsed electrical power science and technology, and the A.D. Sakharov medal, the A.I. Pavlovsky prize, and the Megagauss Award for his contributions to megagauss physics and technology. He was a founding member and the Chair of the IEEE Standing Committee on Pulsed Power Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of the AIAA and was Chair of the AIAA Electric Propulsion Technical Committee, and President of the Electric Rocket Propulsion Society.
