Biography
Catherine Owens is an award-winning Irish artist, living and working in New York City. Her installation-based multidisciplinary practice includes drawing, painting, sculpture, film, video, LED lighting, 3D film and VR technology. As well as her own solo art practice Owens is known for her collaborative work with the rock band U2. As creative director of screen imagery for animation, film and video, she created the band’s visual content for five world concert tours from 1992 – 2010. Nominated for two MTV/VH1 awards for U2’s 2006 video Original Of The Species, Owens also produced and directed the first digital 3D film U23D made for IMAX in 2008. The award-winning film spearheaded a series of major technological breakthroughs in 3D filmmaking globally. The New York Times hailed it as “The first IMAX movie that deserves to be called a work of art.”
In November 2020, in conjunction with the City of West Hollywood Arts Division, Owens launched REMEMBER, an animated sequence of first names for four digital billboards along Sunset Boulevard. The work honored the identity of five women from the Central American region who came to America to forge their future without hindrance. 2020 also saw the installation of a series of seven large-scale LED light works in the lobby of the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester New York, creating an immersive color field environment, that envelope concertgoers as they pass through the space.
In 2021 Owens continued her collaborative work with the renowned avant-garde music group Kronos Quartet, for their Carnegie Hall Voices Of Hope concert, providing ten animated paintings, made during the pandemic lockdown. She has exhibited with Feldman Gallery, New York. Morris Healy Gallery, New York. Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan. Kustera Projects, Brooklyn. Oliver Sears Gallery, Kerlin Gallery, and The Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. Owens has developed a specialist interest in the concept of ‘Audience Experience’ in art, from the contemplative experience of a single viewer, and the large-scale public event of experiencing art in a crowd.
Having spoken widely at conferences and festivals on the subject of art and technology, lecturing on this topic at VR On The Lot at Paramount Pictures, Los Angeles, The Art Of VR at Sotheby’s, New York, as well as at INSPIREFEST, Dublin, Owens has garnered an international reputation as an artist who has worked with audience at scale and with ease. In 2022 Owens became a PhD candidate in Creative Practice at University College Cork, Ireland. She is the recipient of an Irish Research Council Scholarship Award with enterprise partners Ernst & Young. Her research topic ‘Art & Technology: expanding the language of creative practice, emotional resonance, and human connection in the virtual age’ is a timely investigation.
