Rene Ong has carried out research in the areas of particle physics, astronomy, particle astrophysics, and atmospheric science. He received his B.S. in Physics from the University of Michigan in 1981, his M.S. degree in Physics from Stanford University in 1983 and his Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University in 1987. He has had academic appointments at the University of Chicago and the University of California, Los Angeles, and invited positions at the University of Michigan, Columbia University, Ecole Polytechnique and the University of Tokyo. In the areas of particle physics, he worked on the IBM proton decay experiment and the Mark II detector at the PEP and SLC accelerators. In the area of cosmic ray physics and ultrahigh energy gamma-ray astronomy, he helped to develop the CASA-MIA and BLANCA experiments. In the area of very high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, he helped to develop the STACEE and VERITAS telescopes. He currently participates in the VERITAS and Cherenkov Telescope Array projects and in the GAPS experiment for the detection of primary cosmic antimatter.
