Nick is passionate about materials. His work involves the development of materials, including materials design, modeling and production. He has been in involved in the practical development of numerous light alloys and 3D printed alloys - with several patents.
Nick's research is highly interdisciplinary, from being the first to demonstrate a number of stainless magnesium alloys, to the development of highly ductile magnesium, right through to detailed electrochemical analysis that has unravelled many microstructure-corrosion relationships (particularly in aluminium alloys for aerospace and automotive applications), along with the use of machine learning to put the fight to corrosion detection (http://corrosiondetector.com).
Professor Birbilis is a Fellow of Engineers Australia, a Fellow of the International Society of Electrochemistry, a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society and a Fellow of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE, USA). He was awarded the ATSE Batterham Medal and named a Victorian Tall Poppy. Prior to joining ANU, Nick was an ARC Australian Research Fellow, and the Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Monash University - where he was also the founding Woodside Innovation Chair.
