His research program focuses on the development and evaluation of measures of pain, pain beliefs and pain coping strategies, as well as on the development and evaluation of psychological pain interventions. His teaching activities focus on mentoring postdoctoral research fellows in the skills needed to develop a successful research career in rehabilitation science and the field of geriatric rehabilitation. He also facilitates workshops on the clinical applications of Hypnosis and Motivational Interviewing for pain mangement.

He was the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Pain for 12 years from 2010 through 2022 and served as the president of the International Society of Hypnosis from 2021 through 2024. He has published over 700 articles and book chapters and 11 books on the topic of pain assessment and pain treatments.
