Miguel Equihua

I am a senior researcher at the Institute of Ecology in Xalapa, Veracruz. I have a background in biology and mathematics, with degrees in Biological Computation and Ecology. I am recognized as a National Researcher in Mexico. I have expertise in ecology, statistics, numerical modeling, and geographical information processing. I have been involved in environmental assessment studies and have contributed to projects on habitat loss and water quality in Mexico. I have also been involved in the development of national and international environmental accounting frameworks. I have worked on climate change programs and authored chapters on climate change and biodiversity. I have served as an advisor and coordinator for various international commissions and networks. I have organized international meetings and courses on climate change and data science. I have participated in European Union-funded research projects and presented our work at the European Parliament and COP21. I have led projects on using big data and machine learning for sustainable development, one of them received recognition from the Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence. Currently, I am a member of the Academic Executive Committee of a national program focused on social-ecological systems and sustainability.
