Michael Coleman

I obtained a BSc Hons in Genetics from Cardiff University in 1996 where a Wellcome Trust Studentship allowed me to obtain a PhD in Molecular Entomology. This was followed by two years research on putative therapies for cervical cancer at the National Institute of Medical Research, before moving to the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in 2002. Between 2006 and 2010 I was seconded overseas working with the Medical Research Centre’s Malaria Lead Programme in South Africa, with projects in Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. Since 2006 I have delivered assistance to several vector control programmes in Africa and Asia, playing an active role on technical advisory groups to develop insecticide resistance management plans, development and implementation of entomological surveillance and enhancing overall vector control. While I have been based at LSTM (2010-present) I have overseen the development and implementation of novel vector control tools for malaria, visceral leishmanias and Zika. I continue with translational and operational research projects in Africa and India to improve vector control and disease elimination programmes.
