Over the last decade, the major focus of my research has been on how molecular and cellular processes in skeletal muscle affect skeletal muscle composition and performance. After my PhD I became increasingly interested in identifying the molecular and cellular processes that account for the changes in the skeletal muscle composition that occur during aging. Sarcopenia, or the age-related decline and muscle mass and strength, plays an important role in physical decline and disability. To further my goal of investigating sarcopenia, I began a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Luigi Ferrucci at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2013 where I have been using different approaches to study the pathways that lead to human aging, specially focused in skeletal muscle and blood cells.
