Mark Goldberg is full professor in the Department of Medicine, McGill University, is a member of the Division of Clinical Epidemiology, Royal Victoria Hospital, MUHC, and is an associate member in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the McGill School of Environment, and the Department of Oncology. He was a member of Health Canada’s Science Advisory Board and he has sat on a number of expert committees of the U.S. National Academies. From 2009 until 2013 he was co-editor in chief of the scholarly journal Environmental Research. His main interests in research have been in occupational and environmental epidemiology, focusing especially on environmental and occupational causes of cancer as well as on the short- and long-term effects of air pollution on health. His research bridges clinical and environmental epidemiology and he has published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals, covering myriad topics, including the health effects arising from exposures to ambient biogas produced in municipal solid waste sites, environmental and occupational causes of disease, and occupational and environmental investigations of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer. Over the last 25 years he has focussed on the health effects associated with short- and long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and has conducted numerous studies of traffic-related air pollution and particulate air pollution. Notable among these are his recent findings that chronic exposure to ambient air pollution may cause breast cancer and prostate cancer and that short-term exposures increases mortality among those with chronic health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
