Mainak Bandyopadhyay received the M.Sc. degree in physics from the University of Calcutta, Calcutta, India, in 1992, the M.Tech. degree in applied optics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-Delhi), India, in 1994, and the Ph.D. degree from the Technical University of Munich, Munich, Germany, in 2004. He did his Ph.D. work on BATMAN ion source at the Max-Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Garching, Germany.
In 1996, he joined the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), as a Scientist with the SST-1 Neutral Beam Group, after completion of a one-year technical training program in IPR. There he worked on beamline design, cryopump development, and ion source operation. He is currently engaged with the Diagnostic Neutral Beam (DNB) Group, ITER-India, IPR. His current activities include the beamline design of a 100-keV DNB for ITER, the interface between the RF-based ion source with the HV bushing, and setting up of a negative ion laboratory in IPR using an RF-based ion source.
