Research Interests / Professional Background
My research interests are in the following areas;
Photochemistry and reactor development for the treatment of waste and potable water
Biomedical taggant development for viral identification
Environmental tracers for estuarine and marine deployment
Photodynamic therapy for the removal of lice from salmon and algae from stone
Optoelectronics
Environmental sensor development
Carbon dioxide conversion for use as fuel
In 1998 I joined The Optoelectronics Research Centre under Prof.D.McStay on a TCS project involving the development of heat resistant coatings for the glass industry. During 2000 was employed on an EU project “SMT4 ONSITE”, looking at the development of new biocides and a Field Portable Fluorimeter.
In 2002 I joined the Centre for Research in Energy and the Environment, working on a Scottish Enterprise - Proof of Concept project “A new generation of biocide for control of fish lice in fish farms and biofilms on submerged materials”. Upon successful completion of that PoC project I went on to work on a project which required me to call on my Engineering skills as well as my Scientific ones - Development of a drum photocatalytic reactor for wastewater treatment.
In 2005/06 I worked on an ITI Techmedia funded project - Lanthanide materials for fluorescence characterisation and feasibility as security labels and also an NCR funded project - Advanced development of novel lanthanide security taggants and detection systems for labelling/encoding security products.
After successful completion of my PhD between 2006 and 2010 I was employed on a Scottish Enterprise Proof of Concept project “Genespark”, where the overall aim of this project was to develop a novel nanotechnology platform for molecular diagnostics, providing an interesting commercial opportunity and leading to the establishment of an appropriate business structure to apply the technology to a broad range of Medtech and other applications. My role was the development of the fluorescent particles upon which the “Genespark” was based.
In 2011 I took up my current role as a Research Follow working on an collaborative EPSRC project “Enhancing Direct Photoelectrochemical Conversion of Carbon Dioxide”. In this project I have the task of designing and developing photocatalytic reactor units in conjuntion with St Andrews University and the California Institute of Technology.
2013 i undertook another EPSRC position developing a photocatalytic reactor for "Organic Synthesis Through Photocatalysis".
2014 i started a part time lecturing role in the School of Engineering teaching 1st, 3rd and 4th year students, Environmental Engineering, Renewable Energy Systems and Introduction to Electrical Engineering
