Marek A. Mirski

Marek A. Mirski graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in 1980 with the B.S. degrees in chemistry and biology. He subsequently completed the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in neuroscience/pharmacology at Washington University, St. Louis, MO. He completed clinical training both in Neurology and Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School, Baltimore, MD, where he also fulfilled post-graduate fellowship training in neuroanesthesiology and neurosciences critical care. He joined the faculty at the Johns Hopkins Medical School as Assistant Professor in 1992 with appointments in anesthesiology, neurology, and neurosurgery. Subsequently, he undertook a Neuroscience Institute Director position at the Queen's Medical Center, Honolulu, HI, where he created a clinical/academic neuroscience center. Since 1999, he has rejoined the faculty at Hopkins as Associate Professor. As Director of the Neurosciences Critical Care Unit, he oversees the largest comprehensive neuro ICU complex in the nation (two hospitals, 36 beds). He also serves as Chief of the Division of Neuroanesthesiology which manages more than 3000 neurosurgical cases annually. He continues his research in the field of epilepsy—particularly the elements involved in the propagation of generalized seizures. He has more than 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts on topics of epilepsy and neuro ICU, and brain edema; and more than 60 publications overall. A current multicenter National Institutes of Health (NIH) clinical trial is underway to ascertain the efficacy of his laboratory's findings in patients with intractable epilepsy. Dr. Mirski is board certified in both neurology and anesthesiology.
