Michael (Mike) G. Mazarakis (Life Member, IEEE) received the bachelor’s and master’s degrees (summa cum laude) in physics from the National University of Athens, Athens, Greece, the Ph.D. degree in nuclear physics from the University of Paris (Sorbonne), Paris, France, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.
He is a Principal Member of the Technical Staff with the Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM, USA, the Pulsed Power Center, Sandia National Laboratory, Advanced Radiographic Technologies. He recently completed as the lead project physicist the high-power semiconductor experiments as applied to high energy accelerators, and now, he is concentrating his research interest on high current thermionic electron diodes and also on the beam physics and diagnostics of high current induction accelerators. He has done pivotal research in nuclear physics and technology, nuclear astrophysics, particle beam physics accelerator development, z-pinch physics, and magnetic and inertial fusion. He developed and successfully directed for several years the Sandia radiographic program. Before joining Sandia National Laboratories, he was a Research Physicist at the Argonne National Laboratory from 1976 to 1981. Prior to this, he was the Vice President and the Director of the Experimental Program, Fusion Energy Corporation (FEC), Princeton, NJ, USA, and a Faculty Member with Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, USA. He did post-graduate work with the Physics Department, Princeton University, Princeton, where he had the opportunity to take advanced physics courses with the Nobel laureates Prof. James W. Cronin and Prof. Van. L. Fitch, and the University of Pennsylvania with Robert J. Schrieffer. He has published more than 200 papers in referee magazines and conferences.
Dr. Mazarakis is a member of the American Physical Society and of the Division of Plasma Physics. He is an ex-member of the Executive Committee of IEEE Plasma Sciences and Applications (PSAC) and a member of the IEEE Executive Committee of the Power Modulation Conference.
