Career Trajectory
Bio
Miguel Fernando Gonzalez-Zalba received the M.Phys. degree in physics from the University of Zaragoza, Zaragoza, Spain, in 2008, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, U.K., in 2013.
From 2013 to 2020, he was with Hitachi Europe Ltd., Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory, Cambridge, where he was the Head of Quantum Computing from 2018 to 2020. Since 2020, he has been a Lead Quantum Hardware Engineer with Quantum Motion Technologies, London, U.K., where he works toward the development of silicon-based quantum processors. He is also an Associate Lecturer and a Visiting Scholar with the University of Cambridge, an Honorary Research Fellow with University College London, London, and a Quondam Fellow with Hughes Hall, Cambridge. He is one of the driving forces on the development of fast, compact, and accurate readout methods for spins in solid-state systems. He has coauthored over 50 scientific articles and three books, and holds five granted patents. His interests span from silicon-based quantum computing (hardware development), quantum charge sensing, circuit quantum electrodynamics, quantum-classical hybrid circuits, cryogenic CMOS, single-electron devices and circuits, fermionic thermometry, and quantum-limited amplification.
Dr. Gonzalez-Zalba received the Research and Development Technology Award from the Hitachi’s Center for Social Innovation for the development of silicon-based quantum computing technology. He was awarded the Young Scientist Award by the Spanish Royal Society of Physics in 2017. In 2019, he became a Royal Society Industry Fellow and received Hitachi’s Center for Exploratory Research Award for substantial developments in quantum sensing. Since 2021, he has been a UKRI Future Leader Fellow.
