Mark Arend

Mark F. Arend received the B.S. degree in physics from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA, in 1982, and the M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in applied physics from Columbia University, New York, NY, USA, in 1986, 1988, and 1991, respectively. He has more than 30 years of research experience in industry, academia, and government laboratories in areas ranging from high-power microwave amplifier development, long-haul undersea fiber optics telecommunications systems, nonlinear optical transmission demonstrating hundreds of terabit per second and high-bandwidth optical network research to support petascale computing. His current research interests in the Optical Remote Sensing Laboratory, The City College of New York, New York, involve the development of novel sensing instrumentation (e.g., lidar, radar, and sodar) and networks that are used together with satellite observations and complex numerical models of coupled environmental systems with an emphasis on urban coastal meteorology.
