He is currently Full Professor of Histology (SSD BIO/17), at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery "A. Gemelli" of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, headquarters in Rome, where he teaches Histology and Embryology in the Master's Degree courses in Medicine and Surgery, Medicine and Surgery, Biotechnology for Personalized Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery Sciences and in the Degree Course in Nursing.

He is a member of the Faculty College of the PhD in Experimental and Transactional Medicine, at the same University.

Since November 1, 2018 he is Director of the Institute (later Section) of Histology of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery "A. Gemelli" of the Catholic University of S. Cuore, headquarters in Rome, now part of the Department of Life Sciences and Public Health.

Luca Tamagnone is the author of a hundred publications in peer-reviewed international journals (I.F. medio ≈ 9.0), with over 12,000 citations overall and H-index = 53 (Google Scholar). It is his discovery of receptors of signal molecules called Semaphores, involved in the control of embryonic development and the progression of tumors (over a thousand citations). He is an international leader in the study of the role of these molecules and their receptors (Plexins and Neuropilines) in tumor progression and metastases.
