Research investigating various aspects of chronic transplant damage and ischaemia reperfusion injury following renal transplant damage. We have demonstrated a potential role for macrophages in the development of chronic transplant damage, and are currently investigating this further. Work in our experimental system demonstrated a clear protective role for HO-1 in post transplant IRI, and we have completed an early clinical trial in renal transplant recipients confirming that treatment with hemearginate leads to HO-1 upregulation and we are planning a multi-centre trial to examine the clinical benefits.
