He was born on September 2, 1954. He was the discoverer of RNA editing in plant mitochondria, ending the controversy that plant mitochondria did not use a universal genetic code. Over the past 15 years, he has conducted groundbreaking research elucidating the role of the signaling molecule nitric oxide (NO) in plants and is currently the world reference on the subject. More than 100 publications, one book and book chapters in plant physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. He has received the Bunge and Born Prize in Plant Biology (2006) and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation: Nitric Oxide-Mediated Processes in Plants (2005), among others. He was chairman of the 2013 Bunge y Born Awards jury.
