I have pioneered the field of ‘physical activity and ageing’, by working on lactate transport sites and function in brain, leading to the ground-breaking discovery that lactate coordinates effects of physical exercise on the brain through the lactate receptor, HCAR1. I have extensive experiences in leadership and administration. I was a group leader in a former Centre of Excellence, the Centre for Molecular Biology and Neuroscience (CMBN) at the University of Oslo in Norway. I have an international reputation on ageing research, e.g. serving as a Professor of Neurobiology of Ageing at the Center of Healthy Ageing, University of Copenhagen, C in Denmark. I have been a Vice-Dean of Research at the University of Oslo,, Norway (2017-2021) I have demonstrated sound leadership in the training and advancement of young scientists, with many of them pursuing successful academic careers. I initiated and created the 1st Norwegian interdisciplinary Centre on Healthy Ageing: NO-Age Network (est. 2018; noage100.com/people). This initiative is ambitious, timely, novel, and necessary. It is formed via deliberations in NO-Age Network meetings and public debates hosted by our network prior to WHO’s “Decade of Healthy Ageing”.
