Bio
Dr Lisa Bunn is an Associate Professor of Neurological Rehabilitation, a trained physiotherapist and academic researcher. Lisa has experience of core and specialist areas of adult and paediatric neurology and neurorehabilitation services in the NHS. In 2006 Lisa commenced a PhD in neuroscience investigating cerebellar ataxia and sensory mechanisms of balance control. During this time she worked in the London specialist ataxia clinic led by Dr Paola Giunti at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH.
Immediately following her PhD completion, Lisa conducted a pilot feasibility study of a home-based randomised controlled trial with remote assessment investigating a newly designed therapy for ataxic balance targeting newly established disease processes (informed by PhD study).
Lisa transitioned to Plymouth University in 2011. At Plymouth Lisa has established herself as a generic academic, teaching at under and post-graduate levels and leading the final year neurological physiotherapy teaching programme. Lisa qualified as a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PGCAP gained 2014). Lisa's main research interests are in the field of neuro-rehabilitation and translational neuroscience.
Lisa has numerous invited presentations both nationally and internationally and has recently has enjoyed an international collaborative visit to the University of Hasselt's human motion analysis laboratories. Lisa prides herself in ensuring dissemination of her research projects to a wide range of audiences including scientific, academic, patient and physiotherapy populations and publications regularly appear in periodicals and patient newsletters in addition to presentations undertaken and peer reviewed publications in manuscripts.
During her post-doctoral career Lisa has been a member of the scientific committee and executive committee for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (vice-chair of the Research and Development committee) and the Research Officer of the Association for Chartered Physiotherapists In Neurology.
Lisa currently supervises at BSc, MSc, MClinRes and PhD levels and in her mission is to facilitate clinical research. In 2016 Lisa contributed to the NICE accredited Royal College of Physicians Stroke Management Guidelines and National Ataxia Guidelines. She contributed to two major core texts for health professionals training in neurological assessment and management. Lisa is Director of Studies for two PhD students and supervisor to two additional PhD students. Lisa is currently leading a large multi-disciplinary research team utilising a coproduction of research approach to advance evidence based practice for children with Ataxia.
Lisa is a long term collaborator with a team of clinical academics at Alder Hey and Edge Hill University as part of an NIHR funded programme of research, supervising PhD candidate Helen Hartley.
