Ali Khumaeni (khumaeni@fisika.fsm.undip.ac.id) was born in Kendal on August 7, 1983. Khumaeni earned his B.Sc degree from the Department of Physics, Diponegoro University, Indonesia, in 2006, with a judicium of cum-laude. During undergraduate study, he conducted a research on laser plasma spectroscopy at the Radiation Physics Laboratory (Diponegoro University) and the Research Center of Maju Makmur Mandiri Research under the supervisions of Prof. Wahyu Setia Budi, Sofjan Firdausi, and Dr. Koo Hendrik Kurniawan. In 2007, he entered the Department of Physics, University of Fukui, Japan as a research student under the supervision of Prof. Kiichiro Kagawa.
In 2009, he entered the Master Program of Nuclear Power and Energy Safety Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, University of Fukui. He acquired his master degree of engineering (M.E.) in 2011 after completing his thesis with the research topic of laser plasma spectroscopy for spectrochemical analysis of nuclear fuel material under the supervisions of Prof. Hideaki Niki and Prof. Kiichiro Kagawa. In the same year, he started his doctoral study at the same graduate school in the University of Fukui. During the research, he and his team developed a novel method of LIBS by utilizing the specific characteristics of a TEA CO2 laser, which is then called the method “TEA CO2 laser-induced gas plasma spectroscopy (LIGPS)”. By devising many unique sampling techniques, he and his team have proved that the LIGPS method can be applied for highly sensitive and direct elemental analyses in various delicated samples including powder, organic solid, aerosols, liquid, soils, and so on. For this high-novelty research project, he received doctoral degree of engineering (D.E.) and was awarded as the best graduating student at doctoral course, which was accomplished only for 2 years. He was then awarded as the postdoctoral recipient (research fellow) in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), Tokaimura, Japan for 1.5 years for conducting a research on the development of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) synchronized by pulse microwave for specific application of nuclear material analysis.
Khumaeni has been a permanent lecturer at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and mathematics, Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia since 2014. From 2016 to 2017, he received award as a specially appointed assistant professor at the Research Center for Development of Infra-red Region, University of Fukui, Japan for conducting a research on the generation of high-intense terahertz using pulse femtosecond laser.
He has received numerous awards, including: First achievable lecture at Faculty of Science and Mathematics and 2nd achievable lecturer at Diponegoro University in 2018, early career chemist award from Pacifichem, Hawaii in 2015, The best graduating student of PhD program in University of Fukui, Japan in 2013, Most outstanding paper from Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) in 2012, Outstanding poster presentation from Pacifichem, Hawaii in 2010, and Young Scientist Award from 4th International Conference on Laser Probing, Nagoya Japan in 2009.
He directs his research on the development of pulse laser ablation for atomic emission spectroscopy of LIBS and synthesis of metal nanoparticles. For LIBS, he deeply studies the fundamental aspects of plasma dynamics in various gas environments including Ar and He gases and applies the LIPS for elemental analysis in various fields including biomedicine, environments, energy, and food industries. In the field of nanotechnology, he has been synthesizing and modifying nanoparticles (NPs) from the high-purity metals such as gold, silver, zinc, titanium, platinum, copper, and iron. As a member of Research Center of Maju Makmur Mandiri, his research focuses on fundamental aspects and applications of LIBS for biomedical research such as elemental analyses of human blood serum for the early detection of human’s diseases. Furthermore, he also works on applications of LIBS for the trace and impurity analyses of industrial metal products such as alloy and iron. Up to now, he has published over 81 papers in scientific peer-review journals and proceedings. Currently, he is editor in-chief Journal of Physics and Its Applications published by Department of Physics, Diponegoro University. He is also an active fellow in Indonesia Physical society, Indonesian Optical Society, and LIBS society.
