Bio
Prof Khangelani Zuma is an Executive Director of the Human and Social Capabilities division at Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and holds Honorary professorship from the University of the Witwatersrand with the School of Public Health. He has held in executive position within HSRC since June 2012. Professor Zuma is a qualified statistician holding a PhD in statistics from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, an MSc in Biostatistics from Hasselt University (former Limburgs Universitaire Centrum) in Belgium and BSc (Education) from Vista University (now University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus) majoring in Mathematics and Statistics.
Prof Zuma has worked in a number of areas of public health for over 20 years ranging from being the chief statistician on research projects to being a principal investigator on large scale surveys and clinical trials. His expertise and research interests span around survey design, complex data analyses, linear and non-linear mixed models, hierarchical Bayesian models, (correlated) survival data analyses, epidemiology: modeling infectious diseases data, HIV incidence estimation and monitoring and evaluation of HIV intervention programs. Prof Zuma is an internationally recognised researcher in epidemiology, statistics and public health. He has also taught statistics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His recent publications include authoring and co-authoring papers published in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, migration and biostatistics. He has presented papers at both local and international conferences.
Prof Zuma is currently an overall Principal Investigator on a National HIV Prevalence Survey (SABSSM) that has been implemented at HSRC since 2002 providing valuable information on the dynamics of HIV in the country. He is currently a Principal Investigator on the first ever Gender Based Violence Survey conducted in South Africa and a Co-Principal Investigator on a National Covid-19 Antibody Survey among others. Prof Zuma has played other key leading roles in more than 20 large funded research projects. He has held a number of key positions including chair person of the ministerial committee, member council of the University of Venda, member of council at Statistics South Africa, serving on the Research Ethics committee of CSIR and President of South African Statistical Association.
