He served as the president of the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology (JSGE, 2009-2014), the president of the Organization of Japanese Digestive Disease Week (JDDW, 2013-2019) and the President of the Asian Pacific Association of Gastroenterology (APAGE, 2014-2018). Currently he has been appointed to be the president of Asian Pacific Digestive Week Federation (APDW) since 2018. His major research interest is upper gastrointestinal diseases including gastric cancer and Helicobacter pylori.
He has been serving as an editorial board member/consultant in a number of international journals such as Gut and Gastroenterology. He was awarded Boas Medal from the German Society of Gastroenterology, Marshall and Warren Award from the JGHF/APAGE and also from the EHMSG. He was given WGO distinguished global lecture award from WGO. He is an honorary member of Hong Kong Society of Gastroenterology, JSGE, and the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine.
