Preclinical research suggests that Ketamine and MK-801 preferentially inhibit NMDARs in cortical GABAergic fast-spiking interneurons. These neurons, which express parvalbumin and maintain the excitation/inhibition balance, could be a prime site of NMDAR hypofunction in schizophrenia. Our current research is focused on determination of the precise role of NMDARs in the function of immature fast-spiking interneurons.
