The Satchell group research focuses on the biological activity and structural biology of infectious microbes. The primary research project addresses secreted protein toxins of the MARTX family and how these contribute to infection with Vibrio cholerae, a pathogen important for the diarrheal disease cholera, and Vibrio vulnificus, a pathogen that causes seafood-associated septicemia and necrotizing fasciitis from wound infections. One of the toxins was discovered to cleave the oncoprotein Ras, and the group is developing novel toxin-based therapeutics to target cancer. Dr. Satchell also leads the Center for Structural Genomics of Infectious Diseases that determines the x-ray structures of infectious agent proteins with impact on antimicrobial resistance, viral pathogenesis, and bacterial infections. Her group has been a leader in studies of the 2'-O-methyltransferase of SARS-CoV-2 and is working on drug discovery to target COVID-19.
